Great Day Trips in the Mount Vernon, Ohio Area
As the weather warms and the world begins to turn green once again, many people are ready to hit the road and have some fun. The team at The Alcove knows what it is like to work hard, and also how rewarding it is to take a break and enjoy life. We offer the following day trip ideas in the hopes of inspiring your next adventure near the Mount Vernon area.
Honey Run Waterfall
Just a few minutes down the road is an ideal setting for a short hike and a romantic picnic. Honey Run Waterfall is a 25-foot high drop where the Honey Run stream cascades down. Visitors can take a short hike to view the falls, then continue on for amazing views of boulders and Blackhand sandstone cliffs in the area. The property is part of the Knox County Park District and offers plenty of parking and multiple trails.
Spend the Day in Amish Country
With just a short drive, visitors can spend a day observing an entirely different way of life. A great place to begin is at the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center, which features exhibits, displays and interactive presentations about what it means to embrace a more traditional life away from the hustle and bustle of modern pursuits and conveniences. There are multiple theater experiences, annual festivals and plenty of self-guided driving tours throughout the area.
Take Things Underground
Another great option is a day trip to Ohio Caverns. Visitors can choose from multiple tour options, all of which feature knowledgeable guides who will highlight the geological features of the caverns as well as the history of the site. Above ground, there are plenty of picnic tables and a shelter house where families and couples can gather. A souvenir shop is a great way to bring a memento of the day home with you.
Planning is the only way to experience the beauty and grandeur of Schnormeier Gardens. This is a privately held property and the home of a local couple. Their labor of love has been the creation of a unique oasis complete with a Chinese pavilion, Japanese teahouse and an arched bridge. The Asian theme continues throughout the gardens, where visitors can enjoy sweeping views as well as private niches. The Gardens are only open to the public for a few short days in June, so be sure to plan ahead for the chance to visit.
We hope that these ideas will serve as the inspiration for your next day trip in the Mount Vernon area, and we look forward to seeing you and your family soon at The Alcove Restaurant & Lounge.
